Some restaurants become favorites; others become institutions. Gramercy Tavern manages to be both.
Opened in 1994 by restaurateur Danny Meyer, Gramercy Tavern has long been one of New York's most celebrated restaurants, combining serious cooking with the kind of warm, gracious hospitality that never feels overly formal. Its accolades are extraordinary: nine James Beard Awards, including Outstanding Restaurant, along with a Michelin star and decades of critical acclaim,
Chef Michael Anthony has helped carry that legacy forward with seasonal American cooking that feels polished yet wonderfully approachable. The restaurant itself offers two experiences--the more casual Tavern and the elegant Dining Room--but both share the same sense of warmth and unmistakable New York character.
We stopped at the Tavern for cocktails during our recent visit, and it reminded us why Gramercy Tavern has endured while so many fashionable restaurants have come and gone. Beautiful surroundings, impeccable hospitality, and that rare feeling that everyone genuinely wants you to be there. A New York classic--and still very much worth seeking out.
